Description for Madikwena Game Farm
The malaria free Madikwena Game Farm & Crocodile Ranch lies in the heart of the Groot Marico Bushveld where you are welcomed by irrigated pastures, surrounded by citrus trees, olive groves and table grapes. This splendid bushveld is home to crocodile breeding and other wildlife ranching. An inspiring combination of modern day equipment on a vintage site intertwined with "Bloubuffel grass", Apiesdoring and Camel thorn trees.

The town Groot Marico, situated in the North West Province, is named after the Groot Marico River, one of the few perennial rivers in this area. The town was formed by the Voortrekkers in the 1850 ‘s and was only proclaimed in 1948. The word “Marico” is well know because of Herman Charles Bosman’s writings of this area “There is no other place I know that is so heavy with atmosphere, so strangely and darkly impregnated with that stuff of life that bears the authentic stamp of South Africa”.

The land of mampoer, South Africa’s ‘moonshine’. Made from fruit, (mostly peaches or marulas) and named after the Pedi chief Mampuru.

The Reader Family’s existence in the Marico has been traced as far back as the 1880’s, to the days of Livingstone himself. Marico was then known as the Old Transvaal and its neighbours to the north known as Bechuanaland, Rhodesia (Northern) and Nyasaland.
Great grandmother Reader was the first white woman to sign the register at Victoria Falls. Great, great grand father Reader was a well known big game hunter and tradesman and his playground was Lake Ngami. His adventures are noted in a number of publications by James Chapman “Travels in the interior of South Africa”.

We are passionate about our history and our heritage and we invite you to come and experience the spirit and hospitality of the Marico firsthand. The Marico region is truly captivating and a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
