Review:          The PetHealthCare.co.za Team tried out the HALTI harness:

Dog:                Large dog: Dobermann
Temperament: Very energetic, semi trained, very playful, yet demanding
Age:                1 ½ years old.

Was it complicated to fit the harness?

We had to look at the graphics on the instructions to get it right and understand the fit.  Fitting this harness correctly is key to effective use.  It took us about 5 minutes to figure the correct fitting, but once we understood, we will never struggle again.  It’s very easy once you have figured out how to put it on and understand the procedure.  A few minor adjustments on the strap settings was needed.

Is there padding on the harness?

Yes, this harness has padding for comfort.  We believe it’s a great feature as it benefits the dog by keeping him comfortable during his walk and training.

Did the dog perform better?

At first he was as excited as always, all over the place and just wanting to run.  Unlike the mouth harness of similar concept, he did not show any form of discomfort for this ‘new’ item.  We felt there was a sense of more control with this harness, and it is a great tool to assist the dog in his training.   There are 2 options for the leash to be attached to this harness, the one is under the neck and the other is above the spine.  It’s better to attach 2 leashes (or use the double leash system) to start off with.  Once the dog understands the commands between your words and your tugs, eventually the only leash to use will be the one attached to the top of the harness by the spine.

Our verdict:

We prefer this training tool to the similar concept in a muzzle format.  The muzzle harness worked very well, but it scarred the top of the dogs nose, so we stopped using it.  We love the added padding for comfort and the fact that it comes in 3 sizes for small to large dogs.  This HALTY chest harness is not a quick fix, but a sure better option for the training process of dog and owner, to make walking and running a more pleasant experience.
