Mistake No 4:
Overlooking Ticks
Always check your dog for pests after taking him for a walk in the woods or outdoors. Tick bites can potentially put your dog at risk for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, and several other diseases that can make them ill. When you come across one, do not pull it off. Use tweezers to remove it and ensure you have removed the entire head. Also, invest in tick control products to keep those pesky critters away.
An amazingly useful and pet-safe product to use as a defense against insects is diatomaceous earth. This natural “insect dust,” comes from deep under the earth, crushed into a fine un-dissolvable powder, effectively kills ants, roaches, fleas, bed bugs, or any other insect with an exoskeleton by essentially dehydrating the insect – yet it’s perfectly safe for all mammals to ingest and is even used to treat internal parasites. The powder can be sprinkled onto any surface, between mattresses, and even on your dog’s skin. When using it with pets, use only food-grade diatomaceous earth.
