Video Shelter pets via a Pet Shop

There are thousands of animal shelters in around the world. And most of them are overcrowded. Yet, people keep spending a lot of money to buy a pet rather than adopting one.

At Priceless Pets they believe there's no difference between pure-bred animals and shelter animals. To show this, they invited one pet shop to lend its displays for one day. They replaced the animals for sale with pets for adoption. Without telling people. After all, better than buying a life is saving one.

Wow what an amazing thing for shelters and pet stores to do!

The problem unfortunately is that when these animals are given away for free, they are exposed to :

1) No homechecks

2) criminals who will use these pets as bait for their fighting rings

3) Giving away pets for free (or anything for that matter) is known to be a big no-no as people do not always appreciate things that they did not have to pay for.

A possible solution is that we would like to suggest the following should any shelter or pet store in South Africa wish to try this model:

  1. Never give pets away for free.
  2. Sell the dogs and cats for a fee (which can be going back to the shelter)
  3. Create a system for home checks.
  4. Build up a database to follow up and help manage the animals, because puppies and kittens are cute but when they grow up, people might not enjoy them any longer and they could become neglected.

Its a real catch 22 situation, but overall, we believe that their hearts are in the right place, lets hope they just do it with some sort of plan for after-care or follow-up checks.
