Info for Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre
Service Type Animal Welfare Organisation or Animal Shelter
Brief description of service Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre is a pro-quality of life organization that functions based on the principles of the rehabilitation and rehoming of stray, ill and abandoned animals, the sterilization of animals to curb the growing problem of over-population and the education of animal owners on the proper care and sterilization of their animals.

Uitsig was born in 2009 when Denay Saunders, the founding member and CEO was working as a veterinary assistant at a veterinary practice. She was running a boarding kennel at the time from her home and started taking the stray and abandoned animals from the veterinary practice home to care for them, find their owners or find them new homes. This soon went from a small operation of approximately 20 animals in her care, to 70 animals, 150 animals and now the approximately 650 animals we care for. Along the way Leslie van der Watt joined the day-to-day operations of the Centre and is currently the Centre Manager, overseeing the daily operations of the Centre and managing the daily tasks for the staff. We also do not just care for dogs, we also have approximately 80 cats, 10 horses, a billy goat (very naughty), lots of chickens rescued from battery farms and approximately 25 pot-bellied pigs. We also recently rescued two calves that have joined farm life. Apart from our own rescues, we also have good relationships with other welfare organizations like Fisantekraal Animal Welfare, Animal Rescue Team and Hermanus Animal Welfare and provide them a place of safety for their animals if their facilities are full or sanctuary to an animal in need of rehabilitation or an animal difficult to home in their areas. We also build our wooden furniture and decorative pieces from recycled wood that we sell to raise money for the care of the animals.

As an animal rescue organization we offer volunteer programmes in which the public and assist us with the following:
