Flea Control with Activyl

Another good reason for pets to love us…

Imagine you were infested with fleas.  How would you feel?

The probability of a dog or cat picking up fleas at some point in their life is extremely high and almost inevitable.  It is an unpleasant infestation to have and you would definitely want to get rid of them as soon as possible. In addition, you would want a treatment that is gentle.

One appropriate way to achieve both of the above is by using a spot-on-flea product that uses bioactivation in the form of a product called Activyl®, allowing every pet owner that opportunity.  Flea products with bioactivation kill fleas effectively – but only after converting into a highly active insecticide once inside the fleas.

Activyl® is an example of revolutionary veterinary innovation.

Activyl® uses bioactivation, which means that it only becomes fully active on contact with flea gut enzymes, leading to rapid paralysis (>95% of fleas are killed within 4-48 hours), starvation and death for the parasite.  In addition to the high efficacy and very selective toxicity against adult fleas, Activyl® has also shown activity against flea eggs and larvae in the pet’s immediate environment.  The latter was demonstrated in an environmental study where Activyl® inhibited the development of adult fleas in debris from treated animals by >90% for 6-8 weeks, resulting in a dramatic decrease in household infestation.  In similar, longer studies, Activyl® was shown to leave cat households free of fleas within 3 months. Furthermore, the effect on developing life stages allows us to break the flea life cycle and aids in better long-term control of flea infestations.

How safe is Activyl®?

Laboratory and field studies have demonstrated an exemplary margin of safety in dogs and cats, with mild adverse effects following treatment, at five times the recommended dose on eight occasions at 4-week intervals and on six occasions at 2-week intervals. It may be used in puppies and kittens older than 8 weeks of age.

Take home messages:

Activyl® is a unique and novel, highly active insecticide for fleas that acts at a different receptor site in the insect nervous system and should form an integral part of any flea control program.  Activyl® affects developing flea stages in the environment of the treated pet which helps break the flea life cycle and prevents further infestations when applied every 4 weeks.  Finally, Activyl® has demonstrated excellent efficacy and safety under field conditions.
